(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position – Pastors in trials for witchcraft in the Danish Reamls, 1559-1660

The post doc position concerns Lutheran pastors and their role in trials for witchcraft. Pastors were royal officials and thus servants of the state and the church. In fact, outside of Copenhagen and the garrison towns they were by far the most prevalent royal officials and the group most evenly spread out over the various parts of the sprawling Oldenburg monarchy’s domains. Furthermore, bishops, deans and pastors formed a parallel hierarchy of royal officials besides that of the king’s lieutenants who they were not subordinated to. How did pastors navigate in this intersection of secular and religious power when godly power was the official ideology? To what extent did they comply with the law on witchcraft? Is it possible to detect any general patterns focusing on specific realms? Did certain pastors stand out? How about those that had a particular educational background? Did they also involve themselves in other “moral crimes” in the secular courts, i.e. sexual offenses?

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc positions at the Digital Democracy Centre

We seek applications for the following 2 projects. (It is possible to apply for more than one project. Please see information under " Application ") if you wish to be considered for more than one project position, please see the information under “Application”).

I. Microtargeting
Microtargeting of voters refers to the process political campaigns use to identify the segments of a voting population they intend to engage for identification, persuasion, and mobilization. With the rise of big data and artificial intelligence during the last decade, election campaigns have been able to tailor their message in a much more precise way for much smaller segments of individual voters. Microtargeting has potentially profound consequences for democratic debate and deliberation as it allows parties and politicians to devise specific messages for groups in society rather than presenting a common platform. It also carries the danger of a more segmented public sphere.

II. New Demands on the News?
In collaboration with a Danish media company, this project will develop new ways of formatting, packaging, and presenting news on streaming platforms. With inspiration from non-news genres, we will create narrated news formats to provide an immediate pay-off by instantly arousing audiences and providing them with a clear idea of why they should keep watching. Through experimental research, we test the ability of such formats to provide immediate payoffs, both in the lab and at the existing on-demand platform. In our lab, we measure the emotional response (EDA) to selected news items, and through eye-tracking, we estimate the attention paid to news items on the platform.
