PhD position summary/title: Two PhD Positions: Degrowth, Circular Economy and the Metabolism of City Regions
We are looking for two PhD candidates working on a project on circular economy and degrowth in city regions, titled RECYCLE and led by the PI, Dr Federico Savini. The project studies the regulatory frameworks establishing how waste materials are reused and reduced in cities. Three sectors are investigated: the built environment and construction waste, food waste and industrial food chains, and residual heat networks from incineration. As part of the PhD trajectory, the candidates will conduct empirical research and conceptual analysis of initiatives that both aim to reuse and reduce waste streams. The supervisor will select these initiatives but will take place in city regions of four specific countries: Spain, Italy (PhD1), Germany and Austria (PhD2). One candidate will focus on Italy and Spain. The other is in Germany and Austria (please see language requirements).

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD Positions in Conversational AI
PhD position A
The PhD project corresponding to this vacancy is aimed at making neural networks for conversational agents more efficient. How can we reduce their data and compute footprint, both at training time and at inference time? Knowledge distillation has emerged as a potential solution, allowing small student models to learn from and emulate the performance of large teacher models. In this project, you will develop neural architecture search methods to emulate large conversational models subject to limited memory and parameter budgets. Research for this opening will be conducted within the IRLab under Prof. Maarten de Rijke.
PhD position B
The PhD project corresponding to this vacancy aims to generate synthetic data for training conversational agents. One of the limitations of developing models for conversational agents is the availability and cost of labelled training data. A common approach to alleviate this need is to increase the amount of training data by data augmentation. In this project, we will use controllable text generation techniques to develop alternative and unbiased dialogue trajectories to train conversational systems. Research for this opening will be conducted within the IRLab under Prof. Evangelos Kanoulas.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position European identity formation
The doctoral researcher will be part of the EUDENTIFY research project directed by Prof. Theresa Kuhn. This 5-year research project is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and seeks to analyse the relationship between European supranational institution building and collective identity formation. The doctoral researcher will conduct a PhD project to analyse European institution-building's impact on people’s national and supranational identities. The researcher will focus on the role of citizens’ cross-border interactions and institutional socialization as mechanisms of identity change and will combine advanced quantitative methods (difference-in-difference designs, experiments) with qualitative research designs (focus group interviews and in-depth interviews). While a concrete project plan exists, there is room for developing research ideas. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty of Humanities with the goal of obtaining the degree of PhD.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in AI4Forensics: Forensic Analysis of Money streams in Subversive Crime
Do you want to do research at the frontier of Artificial Intelligence to support forensic investigators? Then this position will be of interest to you. The Multimedia Analytics (MultiX) group of the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) have started the AI4Forensics lab. To strengthen the lab, we are seeking a new PhD student. The goal of the lab is to develop forensically sound innovative AI methods, which have a probabilistic interpretation and which are accompanied by visualizations to make the methods and the results explainable to non-experts. The methods developed in the project will in due course be used in casework of the Netherlands Forensic Institute and therefore your work directly contributes to justice and a safer society. This PhD position will focus on the analysis of large-scale financial streams to detect and understand traces of subversive crime. Graph convolutional networks are a natural starting point to analyse such financial transactions. As traces can be individual transactions or involve many transactions we aim for multi-scale GCN methods and by using variational methods they will be given a probabilistic interpretation. Interactive graph visualizations which allow to zoom through the different scales will make the methods explainable.

Do you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary research setting where computational chemistry and AI oriented research are joining forces? The Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences , in collaboration with Microsoft Research Amsterdam, is looking for an ambitious PhD student to develop and apply novel computational techniques to answer important chemical/biological/physical questions. Many systems and processes in biology, medicine and material science consist of many interacting molecules that give rise to emergent, complex behaviour. Such complex systems undergo transitions between states, such as the folding of a protein, the association of a ligand, or a phase transition to another state or regime. These transitions are crucial to understand the systems behaviour, but are often rare and difficult to study. Molecular dynamics simulation is a powerful method to study such systems and processes, but since the events are rare and complex, special simulation methodology in combination with Machine Learning is required, to tack this enormous challenge.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Computational Chemistry and AI
This project is about improving the design of molecular architectures such as MOFs using a combination of Machine Learning (ML) and classical molecular simulation techniques. As the main aim is to design/optimize a molecule/material for certain desired properties, we will use ML for rapidly screening of very large sets of potential structures, with molecular simulation techniques providing training data. Prediction of adsorption, and breakthrough simulations will be the primary target, but dynamical/transport properties are also of interest. In addition, force fields will be designed and optimized using ML in combination with sampling algorithms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Tunable Metasurfaces for Analog Image Processing
Are you a highly-motivated physicist with a strong interest in nanotechnology and optoelectronic experiments? The 2D Nanophotonics group within the Institute of Physics is seeking an excellent and ambitious PhD candidate to perform fundamental research at the interface of nanophotonics and two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials for the project “Tunable metasurfaces for analog image processing”. Optical image processing is at the heart of many new technologies, including augmented reality, autonomous driving, and optical eye tracking. It is usually performed by digital processing of images that are captured by a digital camera, and is thus very energy-intensive and limited in speed. Recently, it has been demonstrated that optical metasurfaces – 2D geometries composed of nanoscale light scatterers – can be designed to perform mathematical operations on optical images directly in the analog optical domain, without the need for electronic processing. This enables highly parallelized image processing at the speed of light, where the mathematical operation is defined by the nanoscale geometry of the sample.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Geometric Deep Learning of Space and Time
In this position we will study the theory and applications of geometry in various aspects of deep neural networks, focusing on spatial, as well as on temporal data and dynamics. The idea is that geometry is also very important for physics-informed models, where the latent space adopts a geometrical form that conforms to a certain prior that we know must be relevant, towards what one could ‘physics-informed representation learning’ (learn representations that internally encode part of physical reality), as opposed to physics-informed neural networks (that try to imitate physical processes) and object-centric representation learning (which is devoid of any physical notion at the representational level). For instance, if you had the video of a single pendulum, can you learn a representation that not only encodes what the pendulum is, but also what the pendulum does, eg, by attempting to incorporate conservation laws as some form of geometric inductive priors, which the NN can pick up and learn its own version?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Cell-water Structure and Dynamics
Water in living cells contains a high concentration of biomolecules, that can significantly alter its properties (see https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-00858-0). There are even cells (bacterial spores, for instance) in which all chemistry is put to a standstill: these cells can survive for years in a dried-out, chemically ‘frozen’ state, from which they can recover completely and continue living as if nothing happened. The physical and chemical mechanisms underlying this suspended metabolism are still a mystery. In this PhD project, you will help to solve this mystery by using state-of-the-art experimental methods to investigate the structure and dynamics of water and proteins in living cells capable of surviving extreme circumstances, such as drought and thermal shock. Knowledge of how some cells manage to survive complete desiccation for such long periods of time can help to develop strategies for the dry, room-temperature storage of blood and vaccines (important for third-world countries), but potentially even for the dry storage of entire organisms. The project will be carried out at the University of Amsterdam, in cooperation with the Max-Planck Institute in Mainz.

PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD Positions on the (Electro)chemical Recycling of Solid Hydrogen Carriers
Hydrogen is becoming one of the key energy carriers for the future to deal with the challenge of climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, also because it can help to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy resources, while it can be sustainably produced from e.g. solar and wind power through the electrolysis of water. Large-scale usage of H2, however, will necessitate its storage at massive scales. Multiple H2 storage options exist, among which through the production and use of NaBH4, associated with the regeneration of the spent fuel NaBO2. It is the purpose of this research project to develop NaBH4 as circular H2 storage option.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Photocatalysis for biomodification
Antibody-drug conjugates have the advantage that they can target and treat cancer more efficiently without harming healthy cells. However, the preparation of such bioconjugates is often cumbersome and lead to mixtures of compounds which are essentially inseparable. In this research project, innovative methods are being developed which can prepare such bioconjugates fast and selective with the use of light. The project is in collaboration with Prof. Tom Grossmann (VU Amsterdam) and will be highly collaborative.
