The University of Sussex is a public research university located in Falmer, East Sussex, England, it is mostly within the city boundaries of Brighton and Hove but spills into the Lewes District in its eastern fringe. Its large campus site is surrounded by the South Downs National Park and is around 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) from central Brighton. The University received its Royal Charter in August 1961, the first of the plate glass university generation, and was a founding member of the 1994 Group of research-intensive universities.

More than a third of its students are enrolled in postgraduate programmes and approximately a third of staff are from outside the United Kingdom. Sussex has a diverse community of nearly 20,000 students, with around one in three being foreign students, and over 1,000 academics, representing over 140 different nationalities. The annual income of the institution for 2019–20 was £319.6 million with an expenditure of £282 million.

Sussex counts 5 Nobel Prize winners, 15 Fellows of the Royal Society, 10 Fellows of the British Academy, 24 fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences and a winner of the Crafoord Prize among its faculty. By 2011, many of its faculty members had also received the Royal Society of Literature Prize, the Order of the British Empire and the Bancroft Prize. Alumni include heads of states, diplomats, politicians, eminent scientists and activists.

 

(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Fellow Ref 10384

A BBSRC-funded Research Fellow position is available at The School of Psychology at the University of Sussex. This is a collaborative project between the Koya and Singer Labs, which investigate the neural mechanisms of cue-evoked appetitive behaviours in motivation and reward circuits.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of neuronal ensembles in the nucleus accumbens in the emergence and suppression of the spontaneous recovery of food seeking.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Research Fellow in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Ref 20367

Applications are invited for the position of a Research Fellow in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing in the Ion Quantum Technology Group in the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies at the University of Sussex. The position is part of the UK National Quantum Technologies programme and is concerned with the development of utility scale quantum computers capable of solving disruptive societal and industry challenges.

Trapped ions are one of the most mature implementations to deliver practical quantum technologies. We have developed a unique approach for trapped-ion quantum computing that enables scaling to a large number of qubits. The approach couples scalable global microwave based quantum gate technology with fully integrated quantum computing microchip modules that can be linked together using fast electric field links.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Law of Digitization and Trade Ref 9423

This is an exciting opportunity for legal expert in technical change – particularly digitalization and digital automation – and trade to join a new multi-million-pound ESRC-funded Research Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP). The Centre spans four departments in Sussex plus universities in all four UK nations, and comprises scholars from economics, law, business management, politics and international relations. 

The Research Fellow will work primarily on the digital services theme of the ESRC Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP): researching the interaction between UK digital services regulation and trade policy, and the use, scope and effects of Regulatory Coherence obligations in free trade agreements. The post is an early career research position. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the work of the research team, and also to develop their research skills with support from more experienced members of staff.
